An ISA Review: Intern Edition

Hi there! My name is Sisi Li; I’m a freshman majoring in Narrative Studies, and I am currently a member of ISA’s 2023-2024 intern class!

So even though I have only been a part of ISA (and USC in general) for a little over a semester, there are already many good memories and experiences that come to my mind when asked to reflect on my ISA experience. But first, let me explain a little bit about why I applied to ISA in the first place: and why you should consider it as well!

As an international student myself–having lived in Beijing and Bangkok before coming to Los Angeles for college–at USC, I knew that I would want to continue being actively involved in the international student community. That was one of the primary reasons I ended up applying for ISA; as a programming assembly under USG, joining ISA would be one of the best ways to directly contribute to USC’s international student population. Moreover, as an international college freshman living away from home/family for the first time, I also just wanted to connect with students who had similar experiences to myself. And now, after being selected as an ISA intern for my first year at USC, I can say with certainty that ISA has met and exceeded my initial expectations!

For me, even though it may be a cliche answer, I would say that the best part of ISA so far has to be the people. Whether it be through the weekly board meetings, general meetings, or coffee-meets-donuts, I’ve gotten the chance to meet so many talented and interesting students from all kinds of backgrounds. Especially as a freshman, I was really thankful for all the friends I have been able to make through ISA, as they have truly helped me feel more at home during my first semester of college.

Another aspect of ISA that I’ve really enjoyed are our events. Ranging from open GMs to Travel-with-ISA trips, not only did I have fun participating in these events, but I also appreciated the professional experience I gained from helping organize them. Some of my favorite ISA events from last semester include Halloween Horror Nights, the intern retreat at Malibu, and Globefest.

Overall, I am very satisfied with my ISA experience so far, and I can’t wait to keep making more fun memories this semester!
