ISA – Finding a Home in an Unfamiliar Place

Hello everyone! My name is Tun and I am currently an intern at ISA and originally from Thailand, The Land of Smiles. My choice to come to USC was a leap into the unknown, a big difference to my life in the suburbs of Bangkok. The thought of adapting to a new culture and environment, especially as an introvert, had scared me for months on end. The question, "Will I make friends?" constantly haunted me.

But life has a way of surprising us. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I attended the involvement fair at USC last semester. This was where I met Shashwat, the director of ISA. His enthusiasm about ISA's impact and activities convinced me to turn in an application to be an intern.

Since attending the first ISA meeting, my fears and worries all went away. ISA has become more than just a community; it's a family. The welcoming atmosphere provided a sense of safety and belonging, something I convinced myself I wouldn't find. Connecting with others who understand what it is like to be an international student in the U.S. has been incredibly comforting.

Participating in events like Halloween Horror Nights, Globefest, and GM's has deepened these bonds, creating familial ties that grow stronger every week. To any international student embarking on their college journey, remember: ISA is here, ready to embrace you into our community. You're not alone in this adventure.
